Music City Swim Clinic
The Stroke Clinic is designed to evaluate athletes so that we can construct and correct strokes to improve efficiency and speed. The primary reason parents bring their children to practice regardless of team affiliation, is to learn how to swim better—this is where it starts. We want to empower athletes to take their technique to the next level in races as well as practice.
Don’t do it until you do it right, do it until you can’t do it wrong.
Many athletes spend hundreds of hours and thousands of repetitions doing things incorrectly. Being able to realize what they are doing wrong and arming them with methods to improve, empowers them. Athletes will learn new drills and refine old drills to improve their technique. Visualizations, use of technology, and encouraging the use of a swim log will give the athletes a road map for success.
Breaking bad habits is hard and time consuming, but the earlier corrections are made, the faster athletes can work on gaining strength, speed, endurance, and competing at the highest level.
Topics covered include:
• Biomechanics and scientific principles for the understanding the swimming strokes– what does current research tell us? Swimming can be more of an art than a science. What works well for one swimmer may be entirely different for the next swimmer. Just watch breaststroke and you can see the variation amongst athletes. How can your athlete use their strengths to improve their times?
• Progressions for Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Freestyle
10 years of teaching “learn to swim” children and adults has taught us tricks to making kids go faster, easier. There are progressions that can help swimmers with their weaker strokes. Being great at all strokes improves the athletes “feel of the water” and success in the pool.
We teach the athlete how to utilize drills to correct issues for every stroke problem they may encounter.
• Effective Starts and Turns
It does not matter how fast you can swim if you lose ground on the walls. Learning efficient and fast turns is critical. There are simple steps that can make a HUGE difference.
Utilizing the blocks can increase confidence and ability in starts. Diving practice is generally under-utilized at club practices because of over-crowding and time constraints.
• Skills and Methods for Better Under waters
100% of the athletes I have evaluated are NOT training their under waters correctly. Under waters account for the huge time drops in swimming across all ages and ability groups over the past decade. If you want to compete you need to have amazing under waters.
• What you do OUT of the water makes a HUGE difference in the water. Cross training recommendations and suggestions will be given to improve your kick.
Understanding why food is fuel and making correct choices can be critical to your success. Recommendations for what to eat leading up to a meet, as well as during a meet.
How is your mental game and how can you improving your thoughts help you to realize your potential.
